Almost a year after I started this blog, I get tickets to go to the O2 Brixton Academy to see live a band that brings me good memories: Crystal Fighters. I’ve been waiting to enjoy them live since the very first song I got obsessed with. You probably will remember I mentioned the band in a previous post
Crystal Fighters are an English electronic/folk band, formed in London. Their songs come in two different flavours: progressive dance music songs like I do this every day and fusion songs such as All Night.
Crystal Fighters played to present their third album Everything Is My Family, released the past October. They opened the concert playing the Txalaparta, a Basque percussion instrument. Despite the exoticism of the instrument, it reminded me of Safri Duo performances in the early 2000s. Next, they introduced their new album with its Spanish intro song Simplecito. The energy of the audience was high from the first song as they played Follow.
Crystal Fighters performance on stage was the perfect enthusiastic ensemble: the singers perfectly synchronized. Clothes and choreography nicely prepared, and all the members of the band dancing and enjoying their time. The setlist was a comprehensive mix of old a new songs, very satisfying for the audience. They played Yellow Sun, Love is all I got, All Night, I love London, I do this Everyday, Good Girls and Love Natural, among others. The people at the venue seemed very enthusiastic fans from the band. However, their sound wasn’t always as good as it could.
The Fighters dedicated the new track Lay Low to the band’s late drummer, Andrea Marongui, who passed away a couple of years ago, with a theme of peace and love that unifyied those within the venue.
I felt impatient as the end of the concert was approaching and my favourite songs hadn’t been played. To finally satisfy my needs, they said goodbye with the great You & I and they came back after ten extra minutes of applause to perform La plage and Xtatic Truth. La Plage brought a storm of beach balls to a bouncing crowd, the night truly ended as it began, on a high and with an effusive appreciation of life.
It was a concert that fuelled my batteries and made me happy. And, just so you know, I would definitely go to «The Plage» with them.
